Opal

You are here

Cut: Most opals have a cabochon cut – this is because the cabochon cut serves to highlight the range of colours in the opal.
Colour: Opals have an infinite variety of colours. The most popular opal is the Fire Opal, named for its fiery orange-red hues.
Hardness: 5.5 – 6 out of 10 on Mohs scale.
Found in: About 95% of opals come from Australia.
Important information: Opals have a very high water content, and as such, it is very important that opal owners wear the opal in close contact with the skin as often as possible. This will allow some of the warmth and humidity of the skin to transfer to the opal, protecting its colour, and preventing it from drying out and cracking.
Mythology: Opals are one of the birthstones for the month of October.
